Tips For New Tie Dyes
- Pre-rinse before first wear in cold water with your preferred cloth-friendly detergent.
- Soak in a large bowl with hot water for about 15-20 minutes, following with a cold rinse and repeat this step as needed until the water remains clear.
- I recommend only letting them sit after use for a day before washing while they're still newly made, OR hand rinse after use and hang dry until you can wash in the machine.
- When washing after wear, wash separate from other diapers for the first 3-4 washes to prevent any potential dye transfer, using hot water and detergent.
- Line dry or Tumble dry on low heat.
- After the first 3-4 washes they should be all set to wash with the rest of your diapers, but I recommend running a test machine wash/dry cycle with an old wash cloth or color catcher sheet to ensure that none of the dyes transfer over.
More Info: Urine can sometimes cause newer tie dyes to "bleed" if there's any excess dyes left in the fabric due to the acidity in the urine, so it's very important to do the hot water soak to be sure that no excess dye molecules are left in the fabric.
I do my best to thoroughly set and rinse all of my hand-dyed fabrics, and everything goes through a very extensive rinsing/setting process over the course of several days, but different water types can affect the rinsing process for the dyes so I highly recommend following these steps to get the best experience from your dyes in the long run :)
